One day in 2008 Joel Alvarez was a rookie photographer who was working with a model that suggested he use electrical tape her for the last look. He honestly had no idea why she would want this but to make her happy he attempted to use this tape as wardrobe. Essentially I just wrapped her in black electrical tape! Mind you she looked like 2 Christmas hams wrapped in rubber bands when I was done! (I’d never show you these images!) says Alvarez, However, it sparked an idea in his head to develop this idea. In the following weeks he asked a few models that he had worked with in the past to let me practice on them. That was the moment the designs started to evolve! “Although primitive with a lot of trial and error, I remember thinking I was definitely on to something,” says Alvarez. “I began to notice that the way the lines of tape would compliment the figure was unlike any wardrobe or fashion out there.” With a combined social following over 1 million followers, Black Tape Project has become a cultural phenomenon. Joel Alvarez is a true artist and innovator.

Incredible things sometimes come in small packages. This age-old saying holds special significance for Richard Hallmarq. It was, after all, a small Post-It note with a quote by Thomas Edison that inspired him to pursue a career in the industry. “Many of life’s failures are experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up,” it read. Yet, that life-changing note was only the beginning of treasures in small bundles for Hallmarq. Richard Hallmarq’s latest line isn’t gaudy or aggressive. It’s stark streetwear, a look back at the 2000s with fresh eyes. Forgive the philosophical statement, but the simplicity of each piece seemed to be a self-reflexive comment on simplicity itself. A comment on how fashionable something straightforward could be. It was kind of exciting, watching someone embrace the best of street style without trying to force high fashion and low fashion to work together. There was a sense of ease, very L.A.-inspired ease, which gave you hope for New York City obsessions like athleisure. So pull out your baseball cap and embrace it. Casual isn’t hard if you listen to the experts.
